Download Undertow For Free Next Week

January 18, 2008 - Over the holiday break, Microsoft's Xbox Live took a serious performance hit, a problem the company blamed on a "massive increase in usage" due to the largest sign-up of new members to the online service.

On Jan. 3, Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten apologized to subscribers for the issues and promised a free Xbox Live Arcade game was forthcoming. Today, Microsoft announced that game will be Undertow, a new underwater shooter developed and published by Chair Entertainment.

The 2D/3D underwater shooter is one of the best original games we've seen on XBLA (see our review), and features both single-player and multiplayer modes, both online and offline. The game is typically 800 MS points ($10)

In a post on the company's official Gamerscore blog today, Microsoft thanked subscribers for their patience with the service hiccups and promised to keep an eye on things.

"We've implemented several improvements to the service, to help ensure ongoing reliability and performance," a Gamerscore blogger posted. "As the popularity of Xbox LIVE expands, we'll continue to closely monitor the service and make adjustments."

Undertow will be free from Wednesday at 2 a.m. PST through Sunday at 11:59 p.m. PST. The game is free for all Xbox Live members (Gold and Silver) around the world, Microsoft said.

It's the least they could do, considering all the bullshit we put up with over vacation.. When I got CoD4 for xmas, I thought the online would actually work haha... guess you can't even expect that much these days
